Since 2021, Memphis Business Journal’s Women Who Lead has recognized more than 400 accomplished women professionals. These honorees are not only leaders — they are trailblazers breaking barriers and shaping a wide range of industries across Memphis.

The latest cohort highlights standout women in construction and design. MBJ’s editorial team selected this group for their leadership and impact in their respective fields.

Sponsored by Paragon Bank, Women Who Lead celebrates the talent driving Memphis and its economy forward.

Jennifer Alvarez

Construction Superintendent, Grinder, Taber & Grinder

One of the biggest industry trends Jennifer Alvarez sees is the growing number of women entering construction.

“Women have either been intimidated by construction or felt like they didn’t belong. But not anymore. Women are breaking barriers, challenging norms, and changing perspectives,” she said. She added that women bring diversity of thought and unique problem-solving skills to the field.

Alvarez said one of her proudest career achievements was leading a complex project that was completed on time and under budget — her largest project to date as a superintendent.

In her role, she manages field operations for a variety of commercial construction projects. She works closely with the general superintendent, project managers, subcontractors, architects, and owners, while also overseeing safety compliance, coordinating with inspectors and code officials, and interpreting schematics and blueprints to ensure successful project delivery.
