Kemmons Wilson Companies Headquarters

Kemmons Wilson Companies, parent company of Holiday Inn, chose to honor its Memphis roots by transforming a 115+ year old warehouse into a new Class A headquarters. With the building listed on the National Register of Historic Places and left in disrepair after decades of deferred maintenance, restaurant use, and abandonment, the project required both vision and precision.

Grinder, Taber & Grinder was selected for the multi-million dollar renovation based on our experience with revitalizing historic structures. GTG began by stabilizing and repairing the masonry exterior walls and heavy timber framing, ensuring the integrity of the original warehouse was preserved.

Inside, the focus remained on maintaining the character of the space while preparing it for modern use. Nearly 90% of the existing wood floors were salvaged, and a specialized soda and glass bead blasting process was used to remove layers of paint and reveal the natural timber structure. Historically accurate windows were also introduced, bringing additional light into the building while staying true to its original design.

The result is a headquarters that reflects both the legacy of Kemmons Wilson and the craftsmanship of the original structure, with GTG delivering a space focused on preservation, performance, and long-term value.
