Buster's Liquors

Grinder, Taber & Grinder partnered with Buster’s Liquors & Wines to bring their East Memphis location to life, transforming an 18,000-square-foot former Staples store into a destination experience for both loyal patrons and new customers. The vision extended beyond a traditional retail space, focusing on creating an environment that reflects the brand’s legacy while elevating the customer experience.

Working alongside designshop architecture, GTG helped shape a layout that balances openness with a series of more intimate, curated spaces. Wood flooring and detailed finishes throughout the store create a sense of warmth, drawing inspiration from the original Highland location while establishing a distinct identity for the new space.

Maximizing the height and scale of the building was a key priority. GTG incorporated layered lighting elements and imported ceiling features from Spain to highlight the products throughout the store. A custom light installation above the central tasting kiosk and checkout area creates a visual focal point that anchors the space.

One of the defining features is the 90-foot backlit whiskey wall, crafted from walnut-toned wood to create a refined backdrop. Soft ambient lighting was carefully selected to highlight each bottle, giving the display the feel of a curated collection rather than a typical retail shelf.

To support Buster’s reputation for exceptional wines, GTG constructed a climate-controlled fine wine room enclosed with a frameless glass entry. At its center, a white marble table provides space for tastings and gatherings, creating a setting that feels both elevated and inviting.

The cigar selection is showcased through a walk-in humidor designed with glass walls and Spanish cedar framing. Inside, angled cedar shelving presents the full range of offerings while creating a distinct sensory experience.

Beyond the customer-facing spaces, GTG also integrated administrative offices, a public conference room, and a dedicated training area to support daily operations and long-term growth.

The East Memphis location represents the next chapter for Buster’s, combining thoughtful design, operational efficiency, and a strong sense of identity. In the spirit of expansion, GTG also partnered with Buster’s on additional work to support their continued growth in the Memphis market. Read more here.
