Grinder, Taber & Grinder expanding East Memphis HQ

Grinder, Taber & Grinder Inc. is expanding its East Memphis headquarters, giving the company flexibility to accommodate future growth or lease additional space.

The Memphis-based general contractor occupies a 15,292-square-foot building at 1919 Lynnfield Road. They own the 1.5-acre site at the northwest corner of Lynnfield and Quince roads.

The company filed a $2.5 million construction permit to build a two-story, 27,169-square-foot addition.

Initially, GTG considered a three-story addition with around 36,000 square feet.

“The (office) market is pretty soft, so we decided a smaller addition to our building makes more sense,” said Brett Grinder, managing principal. “We’re basically expanding the building to the west.”

The contractor likes the location and didn’t want to endure the challenge of moving to accommodate growth, Grinder said.

“While it’s not the fanciest place, it works for us,” he said. “It’d be the least disruption to our business as we continue serving our clients, which is our main, main, main goal. It gives us a little breathing room for additional hires as the city continues to grow.”

Grinder, Taber & Grinder had around 80 employees a few years ago but now has 112 employees.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if we keep that steady growth rate,” Grinder said. “I can see us having 150 employees three or four years from now.”

Most of their employee growth has been in project management and construction management.

The firm has worked a steady diet of large projects recently, including some for the Memphis Art Museum, the Memphis Zoo, Memphis University School and Evangelical Christian School, among others.

“It just seems like Memphis is doing really well even in the face of tariffs and things that could be a headwind,” Grinder said. “I think Memphis is picking up speed. We’re kind of bullish on our hometown. Of course, we’re biased, but we just want to be ready and have room to add on.”

The projects Grinder, Taber & Grinder are working could have a ripple effect, leading to more construction, Grinder said.

“We think that Memphis is going to continue to do big things, and frankly, all the things we just built, like the museum and the schools, will pay dividends,” he said. “Then more work will happen Downtown, around the zoo or around the schools.”

Grinder thinks the office addition could have a timeline of 12 to 18 months.

“Ours will go slower than most simply because we will always prioritize our other jobs over it,” Grinder said. “It’s kind of like ‘the cobbler’s children never have shoes.’”

The addition will look like their current building with the same brick and glass.

The building has covered parking and access to the Lichterman Nature Center walking trails, according to property sheets.

Ron Kastner, Patrick Reilly and Don Drinkard with CBRE are marketing the property for lease.

“Companies looking for any sizable quantity of office space in East Memphis have no doubt been faced with a shortage of options, especially if first generation space is preferred. So the timing of this new development could not be better,” Kastner said.
